There is no denying that the island is not the cheapest place to stay. As in every tourist region, it can be difficult to find accommodation during peak periods. That is why we work with partners on the island to secure allocations in every price range.
But a stay does not have to be expensive, and Sylt offers a range of varied locations, especially for us trail runners. For the race weekend itself, we recommend staying from Friday morning until Sunday at a minimum; otherwise, it is not possible to arrive on the island in time for the start and registration and to leave it again after the finish closes. For the perfect Sylt experience, this year’s public holiday even makes it possible to include Wednesday (1 May) as well.
Getting to the island
Here is how to get to the island:
- Deutsche Bahn – by train over the Hindenburgdamm
- Sylt Shuttle – Deutsche Bahn’s car train
- Autozug Sylt – private car train from Niebüll
- Sylt Ferry – ferry from Rømø (Denmark)
On the island itself, there is a very good bus service. Single journeys are quite expensive, but the Deutschlandticket is also valid here. There are also many bicycle and e-bike rental options. The excellent cycle-path network — which you will get to know quite well in places on race day — makes a bicycle the preferred means of transport.
Accommodation – from affordable to exclusive
Youth hostel in List
Like so many places on the island, it comes with the fine title of “northernmost”. Situated between the Wanderdüne and the Ellenbogen, this accommodation is the perfect starting point for the northern part of the island. From here, you can enjoy peaceful excursions into nature. The youth hostel has its own bus stop, so it is also well connected for exploring the rest of the island.

The hostel in List is not the only one on Sylt. You will find youth hostels and youth guesthouses across the island, including DJH accommodation in Hörnum and Westerland.
For outdoor enthusiasts
Sylt has a large number of campsites. You can pitch your tent in almost every municipality, and the sites are usually located directly by a bus stop.
For practical reasons, we can recommend Campingplatz Kampen. It was also used by some participants last year. Located between Wenningstedt and Kampen, directly behind the Rotes Kliff, the site offers modern sanitary facilities, a spacious washing-up area with washing machines, an adventure playground, a kiosk — and fresh bread rolls every day.
