From marathon to a 111 km ultramarathon on Sylt
Tobias comes from Lüneburg and has built a remarkable ultra-running career, although he only began running two and a half years earlier. “My first marathon was the Hamburg Marathon in April 2022,” he recalls. “At the finish I felt that I wanted more, and that is how I came to ultra running.” In December of the same year, Tobias ran his first 50-kilometre ultramarathon in Wuppertal. “It was the desire to find out what else was possible.”
The fascination of long distance
Since then, Tobias has completed a wide range of ultras in a short time, including the 80-kilometre Brocken Challenge and a demanding race in the Julian Alps in Slovenia. “The North Sea Ultra on Sylt in 2024 was my first three-figure race,” Tobias says proudly. “It was a wonderful experience to discover the island this way – 111 kilometres of pure running enjoyment.”
Training and preparation for an ultramarathon
Tobias balances a full-time job with intensive training for ultras. “I always do my long runs on Sundays. Depending on the race, I run between 40 and 55 kilometres,” he explains. He places great importance on not overdoing it and having regular sports-medicine checks. Since working with a running coach, his training has developed further: “I bought a Polar watch and started following training plans. I now have a coach who supports me.”
Sylt – a new view of the island
Although Tobias has known Sylt since childhood, the North Sea Ultra changed how he sees the island. “The race brought the island closer to me in a completely new way. Places I knew, such as the Ellenbogen, looked entirely different from this perspective,” he says. “Sylt is beautiful, and the ultramarathon only intensified the experience.”
